PALAZZO DAVANZATI - BUY THE TICKET

Palazzo Davanzati, an ancient 14th‑century residence of the Davizzi family, merchants and bankers, displays its imposing façade on the square of the same name, once populated by ancient tower houses.
Built around the mid‑fourteenth century through the merging of several tower houses and other Davizzi properties, the palace later took its name from another family, the Davanzati, who purchased it in 1578 and enriched its façade with a large coat of arms representing their family emblem. They lived there until 1838, the year of the tragic death of the last heir, Carlo. The palace was purchased in 1904 by the great antiquarian Elia Volpi, who inaugurated it as the Museum of the Ancient Florentine House, an example of the taste for a refined “Florentineness” sought by Italians and foreigners alike. During the first half of the last century it experienced periods of sales, acquisitions, and bankruptcies of antiquarians, until it was purchased by the Italian State and opened as a public museum.
