The Accademia Gallery stands in the place where two ancient convents were once located - the male one of San Matteo and the female one of San Niccolò of Cafaggio - which occupied the entire block between Piazza Santissima Annunziata and Via Ricasoli. The large room has the appearance of a Latin cross church.
The lateral arms and the Gallery of the Prisoners occupy spaces of the medieval San Matteo Hospital, while the Tribune which houses the statue of David was specially built to a design by the architect Emilio De Fabris between 1873 and 1882.
